Thank you everyone! I'm not entirely happy with the piercing; the bits of stem off the main bits could be thinner and the leaves better shaped, but at least it sort of looks like bamboo 
Once my fingers had got over drilling 20 small holes with a drill bit in a pin vice (it's the knurled bits that hurt after a while), the actual sawing didn't take too long - maybe that's why it's not as accurate as it should have been.
