Another foldformed bangle
I got an email over the weekend asking whether or not I could make a triple FF bangle like my double (only bigger). A couple of days hammering and annealing produced this 5.5cm wide bangle:
It's all gone quiet from the enquirer though, so if I don't hear by the end of the week, it'll go into stock.

Wow that's really something Elaine!
But, next time - take a deposit lol. 'yes of course I can do that for you - I take 30% deposit up front'. When they are in the 'zone' they are usually more than happy to hand over a deposit.

Stunning bangle Elaine, that must have taken a lot of hammering!
That's a good tip about the deposit Tinker.

Wow! That is one impressive bangle. What gauge copper is it? I got the book from Amazon a couple of weeks ago but haven't had time to even look at it yet. It is chaos here, I am having a new kitchen put in and what should have been a simple two day job is in it's third week and there are still missing bits to the kitchen cupboards. After a week without a cooker or sink, I at least have water and gas connected now.

Cor, that's really impressive!
Sounds like it's quite an involved process. I'm embarrassed to say I really haven't got the hang of annealing. It's very hit and miss - must try the Sharpie test.

Thank you
Nan, the copper is more or less 0.4mm. It varies a bit 'cos I can't quite keep a smooth motion with the handle on the rolling mill all the way around, so the metal is very slightly wavy. The folding gives it strength so it doesn't need to be any thicker. I hope that your kitchen gets sorted soon, it's miserable having constant disruption.
Lesley, the process is not at all involved and is really very simple. Fold a strip of metal lengthwise as many times as you need for the design; hammer on one edge (about halfway across the thickness), annealing whenever the metal gets too tough to work; do a final anneal; open out and polish.
I've booked another session on Jan's rolling mill tomorrow...

That really is fabulous and I can't believe it will be homeless for long. Really interesting to read the explanation of how it is made.

Re: Another foldformed bangle
I've resisted for a while, but I think I'm going to have to ask the "not-in-laws" to get me the book for Christmas.
Re: Another foldformed bangle
I thought I was the only person who hadn't tried this.
You mark the metal with a Sharpie pen before heating and the ink will disappear when the metal reaches annealing temperature. I presume any permanent marker will do. Some say just put a mark or a line on the metal while others scribble all over it.

Re: Another foldformed bangle
I know the 'sharpie' thing works on sterling silver, is it the same for copper as well then?
I know, I know, I could go and look up the appropriate temperatures but I am sure someone will know this off the top of their heads.

Re: Another foldformed bangle
Elaine, that's just fantastic. I like that even more than the double one you showed us previously. You do produce some great stuff.
(Er I didn't know about the sharpie test either)

Re: Another foldformed bangle
Eventually heard back from the requester and it's sold now. *phew* There's definitely a problem with my meadmoon email
Lynne, Copper anneals at a higher temp than silver, so I'm not sure whether the Sharpie test is sufficient, but there's little chance of melting it so I heat until the piece is definitely glowing red and somehow find it easier to see than the same state with silver.
