disc cutter problems
Help, I've just tried to use my new disc cutter from Cooksons and have managed to half cut a disc but the whole sheet is trapped and I can't get it out. Is it better to whack it hard with the hammer to cut the discs or do a series of milder whacks (if there's such a thing as a mild whack lol)

Difficult one. If the sheet is completely stuck, then you need to bash the punch through (don't use a steel hammer), or make a matching shape punch from something wood, and knock it back through from the other side.
As a general rule using a cutter, hit it as hard as you possibly can. Ideally, you want to cut with the first strike. A 2lb brass hammer is usually the best bet.

Deffinitely don't use a planishing hammer as seen in my local silversmithing class
Re: disc cutter problems
Hi I have a piece of dowel I use to push the cutter through the hole. My bench has an old hole in it from were I used to mount a vice. So the cut disk goes straight through in to my hand and then the cutter ends up on the floor. Do you use oil on the cutter? Also if all things are really stuck you can take the two halves of the cutting block apart with an allen key.
